Inlander Restaurant Week kicked off on Feb 22nd while I was at River Park Square for a meeting and all I could think was “where am I going for lunch?”. Is it just me or does this thought take over our minds from about 10 am until 12pm? I am always thinking about my next meal. #FoodBloggerProblems.

Anyway, I did a little research and realized that there are only three participating restaurants at River Park Square and they are Twigs, Tortilla Union, and Tomato Street. I took a quick poll on Instagram to let the people decide. This completely backfired because I got over 700 votes and the split was within 3 voters! It was neck and neck so I went with Tortilla Union because Mexican (or Southwest as they call it) trumps all other food in my mind. I had been to Tortilla Union one other time but it was for an event so I didn’t choose what I ordered. Normally I like when the owner, chef, server, chooses my food for me, but not when it comes to Mexican food.

Let’s start out by saying that this is a STEAL of a meal. Three delicious and filling courses for $21! Turns out Twigs is also only $21 for all three courses which is shocking! It seems like the $21 options for restaurant week this year are few and far between and most offer really small portions.

Like I said, Tortilla Union is branded as “Southwestern” but I’d say they are border-line Tex Mex, minus the fact that they don’t have queso. Which, I will definitely be suggesting they add to their menu! White queso to be precise. With that said, the Union Guacamole was perfectly limey and fresh. I also LOVED their tortilla soup. It had all the right components and flavors with tons of shredded chicken to make it more hearty. I’d come back just for their tortilla soup and guacamole, but that was only the beginning.

Their third appetizer option is a Smoked Watermelon Salad. This dish took home the trophy from Spokane Restaurant Wars this Summer and it’s still pleasing crowds months later! I finished the entire salad, which is really impressive when you consider that we ordered all three items from all three courses on the Restaurant Week menu, for two people. This is a judgement free zone.

My favorite entrée dish was the Steak and Sweet Potato Hash. I think I liked it so much because I really wasn’t expecting much and I don’t typically go for the steak dishes. I was pleasantly surprised! The sirloin was char-boiled to perfection and presented beautifully on potato bacon hash with a jalapeno chimichurri sauce.

The next two entrees included in the Restaurant Week menu are their Barbacoa Enchiladas and California Cobb Salad. We can’t sleep on the Barbacoa Enchiladas packed full with slow-braised spicy brisket. The California Cobb Salad is a great option for a lighter meal, though this salad is actually huge. It comes with grilled chicken, crisp romaine, diced tomato, candied bacon, black bean corn salsa, jalapeños, avocado, with queso fresco and chipotle ranch. A loaded salad? A restaurant after my heart.

An especially fun aspect of Tortilla Union’s Restaurant Week menu is they have incorporated their Union Margarita and Big Barn Brewing Company Rotating Beer (from Greenbluff) into their third course options. Don’t worry, you can still get dessert and I bet you’ll want to when you hear “Candied Bacon & Creme Brulee”.

After dining at Tortilla Union for Restaurant Week, I realized they are surprisingly underrated! If you don’t have a chance to try them out before March 3rd, don’t worry because they have specials going on all the time. You can get any of their street tacos for only $2 all day every Thursday! And Social Hour food and drink specials every day from 2-6pm and 9-10 Friday and Saturday. The ambiance is fun and warm with classy decor, a fire-place, big bar area, and it’s right next door to Nordstrom at River Park Square. Delicious food and divine shopping? Shwing!
